The details.

Tungsten carbide is the hardest common ring metal going — this band will stay scratch-free through farm work, rugby, and general hard use that would mark up anything softer. The weight is solid and substantial without being uncomfortable. The surface keeps its polish for years with minimal care. One thing to be aware of: tungsten can't be resized, so measure your finger carefully before ordering. Also, for blokes working around machinery, consider a silicone ring as a worksite alternative. Tungsten looks sharp and stays that way.

Living with mirror-polish beveled tungsten

The flat top with beveled edges catches light sharply but shows fingerprints. A microfibre wipe brings it back to mirror in seconds. The bevels resist edge dings better than a sharp square profile — a smart shape choice.

Sizing a flat tungsten band

Flat profiles fit tighter than comfort-curve interiors at the same number — order half a size up. Tungsten can't be resized once cut. Use the MRO NZ free sizer and measure warm, not first thing in the morning.

Tungsten polish vs brushed titanium

Polished tungsten holds its shine for years with almost no upkeep — brushed titanium needs occasional re-graining. Tungsten is four times denser, so it announces itself on the finger. See titanium if you want lighter.

Q: What if I gain weight and it's stuck?

A: Tungsten can be cracked off safely with a vice or jeweller's tool — it shatters cleanly rather than cutting. Hospitals deal with this often; don't panic.

Q: Will the beveled edge chip?

A: The bevels are less vulnerable than a square corner — chip risk is low under normal wear. A direct hammer-blow on concrete is the rare scenario that fractures tungsten.

Q: Compared to a domed tungsten?

A: Flat-with-bevel reads more architectural and modern; domed reads classic. Both wear the same. Pick on look — performance is identical at this weight.

People if you looking for something different, something that no one else has and or you want to impress your other half or even yourself. Then I recommend you get onto this store. I won’t spoil your fun with my silly descriptions but you won’t be disappointed. There is one thing, it’s not really a ‘bad’ thing, but some of pictures on the website do not do the actual item any justice. The rings are 10x better in real life. My wife and I are super impressed, thanks again guys.

The ring itself is fantastic and fit the description perfectly. The first ring we received didn't fit unfortunately, but it came with a ring sizer so we measured again, sent the ring back and ordered the correct size. MRO were very professional and had great communication throughout the process. They showed a lot of care. Thank you very much MRO!

Not an expert so I really couldn’t speak to the quality of the ring, but it hasn’t got any scratches on it thus far which is great.

MRO’s customer service is top notch, I gotta say. I had to send my original ring back, then the replacement as well as the sizing was out, ended up switching out for an entirely different style on the third time. Each time delivery was extremely prompt and for no additional charge other than having to pay for postage to send it back.

That being said, I feel like their sizing is off. With your ring comes a plastic sizing ring (like a cable tie), but the reading it gave was definitely not the size I received (both times), the rings were definitely bigger. I did that sizing ring up tight as I could without being uncomfortable, but the actual ring seems to have a few mm of clearance, so take that information however you want.

All in all, good service and good ring, questionable sizing issues so be prepared to potentially send your ring back, but at least the process is as painless as it could be.

Caring for your Tungsten ring

Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest metals used in jewellery, scoring around 9 on the Mohs scale, so day-to-day scratches from desks, tools and gym equipment rarely leave a mark. Wipe the ring with a soft cloth and warm soapy water every week or two to lift skin oils and soap residue, then dry it fully before putting it back on. Avoid dropping it on tile or concrete — tungsten resists scratching but can chip or fracture from a hard impact.

Take the ring off before heavy lifting, contact sports or rock climbing, since unlike softer metals tungsten cannot be cut off with standard ring cutters in an emergency (medics use a vice-grip crack method instead). The polish holds for years without re-buffing, and the ring will not tarnish, oxidise or react with chlorine in pools or spas.

Common questions about Tungsten rings

Is tungsten a good metal for a men's wedding ring in NZ?

Yes — tungsten is the most scratch-resistant ring metal sold in New Zealand and holds its mirror polish through years of trades work, farming or office wear. It sits in the mid-price band (well under most gold options) and ships free across NZ. The main trade-off is that it cannot be resized, so getting the fit right at order time matters.

Can tungsten rings be cut off in an emergency?

Yes, but not with a standard ring cutter. NZ emergency departments and jewellers use locking pliers or a vice-grip to apply pressure at two points until the ring cracks cleanly into two halves, which actually comes off faster than sawing through gold. Always tell medical staff the ring is tungsten so they grab the right tool.

Will a tungsten ring turn my finger green or black?

No. Quality tungsten carbide rings use a nickel-free binder and are hypoallergenic, so there is no oxidation transfer to skin. If you see grey marks it is usually a metallic-soap reaction from heavy hand-cream or sunscreen — wash with warm water and it lifts off.

How do I get the right tungsten ring size in NZ?

NZ ring sizing uses the same A–Z letter scale as Australia and the UK, so any NZ jeweller can size you for free. Because tungsten cannot be resized after manufacture, we recommend getting sized at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest, and ordering a half-size up if you work outdoors in cold weather.

Considering alternatives?

Buyers weighing up tungsten often also look at titanium rings — both are hypoallergenic and modern, but titanium is roughly four times lighter on the finger while tungsten holds a brighter, more scratch-proof polish. Pick tungsten for weight and shine, titanium for an almost-weightless feel.
