Caring for your Ceramic ring
High-tech ceramic rings (usually zirconium dioxide) are extremely hard — comparable to tungsten on the Mohs scale — and the colour is solid all the way through, so scratches don't show as bright silver underneath. Black ceramic is particularly popular for staying black for life with no plating to wear off. Wash with warm soapy water and a soft cloth as needed; the surface is non-porous so it never stains.
The trade-off is brittleness — ceramic resists scratching brilliantly but can crack or shatter on a hard drop onto tile or concrete. Take it off for heavy lifting, climbing and any work involving hammers or angle grinders. Like tungsten, ceramic rings cannot be resized after manufacture, and emergency removal uses the same vice-grip crack technique. Hypoallergenic, chemical-proof, and pool-safe.

Are ceramic rings durable for daily wear?
Yes for scratch resistance — ceramic holds its finish better than gold, silver or titanium over the long term. The weakness is impact: a sharp drop on a tile floor can chip or crack it. Most NZ buyers find this trade acceptable for the permanent black or white finish.
Will a black ceramic ring fade?
No — the colour is the ceramic material itself, not a coating, so it never wears off, fades or rubs through. A 10-year-old black ceramic ring looks identical to a new one, which is the main reason owners choose it over black-plated metal.
Can ceramic rings be resized?
No — ceramic is fired hard and cannot be stretched or cut and re-joined. Get sized accurately before ordering; NZ jewellers size for free. If you're between sizes, order the half-size up.
What happens if I need a ceramic ring cut off in an emergency?
Same approach as tungsten — NZ emergency staff use locking pliers or a vice-grip to crack the ring at two points. Tell medics it's ceramic, not metal, so they reach for the right tool straight away rather than wasting time with a standard ring cutter.
