Platinum is the most durable precious metal you can put on your hand — dense, tarnish-proof, and genuinely hypoallergenic. It doesn't lose material from scratches, it moves it, so the ring retains its full weight and integrity over time. Heavier and more substantial than gold. The investment is real, but so is the longevity — a platinum ring built well lasts generations. For the bloke who wants to buy once and never worry about it again, platinum is the right choice.

Platinum is roughly 60% heavier than 14ct gold and naturally white all the way through, so it never needs rhodium re-plating. It's softer than tungsten but extremely dense — scratches push metal sideways rather than removing it, building up a soft satin patina over the years that many owners come to prefer. Clean it monthly with warm soapy water and a soft brush; a jeweller can re-polish it back to high shine any time you want the new-ring look.
Take it off for heavy gym sessions and rough trades work to slow patina buildup, though platinum is one of the few metals you can safely wear in chlorinated pools and spa pools without alloy damage. It's also the safest metal for sensitive skin — 95% pure with iridium or ruthenium as the only other component, both hypoallergenic. Resizing is straightforward but pricier than gold because platinum melts at a much higher temperature.
Platinum rings use 95% pure metal versus gold's 37.5% (9ct) or 75% (18ct), and platinum is denser, so the same ring shape weighs more. Combined with higher refining costs, a platinum band typically runs 30–60% more than the same ring in 18ct gold.
Platinum scratches more readily than tungsten or titanium but holds its weight — the metal displaces rather than wearing away, so a 20-year-old platinum ring still weighs almost exactly what it did new. Most owners polish theirs every 5 years or simply leave the soft patina to develop.
Yes — platinum is completely unreactive to chlorine, seawater and household chemicals, which is one of its main advantages over white gold. NZ swimmers and divers often choose platinum for exactly this reason.
Yes — 95% pure platinum with iridium or ruthenium alloying is one of the safest choices for sensitive skin. It contains no nickel, copper or zinc, which are the usual culprits behind contact dermatitis from costume and lower-carat gold jewellery.
If you like the white look but want a warmer price, compare with mens gold rings — white gold gives a similar visual in 9ct or 18ct at roughly half the cost, though it needs re-plating every few years. Platinum buyers usually prioritise weight, purity and no-maintenance whiteness.

Real heft in the hand. Nothing hollow, no plating to wear through. Same metal day one, day ten thousand.
If the metal cracks or breaks during everyday wear, we replace the ring. Plating and inlays wear naturally and aren't covered.
